UNIVEG Group

History

UNIVEG was founded in Belgium in 1987 by Hein Deprez who still stands at the helm of the group today. Hein Deprez started with producing mushrooms in 1983, followed by washing, cutting and packing of vegetables. This period saw the first contacts with the large supermarkets, setting a pattern that has been followed ever since.

Expansion and internationalisation
The period 1990-2005 saw the internationalisation of the UNIVEG group, with the acquisition of various agricultural operations and the takeover of more than 10 other companies in the chain of processing, logistics and distribution. As part of its expansion UNIVEG began to set up various subsidiaries.

Consolidation and growth
In 2005 came the acquisition of Bakker Barendrecht, followed in 2006 by the merger with Bocchi. As a result, UNIVEG quadrupled its volume and acquired a strategic presence in 4 continents.

Leadership
In 2007 UNIVEG reached an agreement with Katopé to acquire its shares and merge the Katopé group with the UNIVEG group. Katopé is a leader in production and distribution of exotic fruit, specialities and high value-added products.
In the same year an agreement with Alara was reached to join the UNIVEG group. This leading Turkish company is the biggest fresh fig exporter in the world and the most important cherry exporter to Europe.

On 19 August 2008 the transaction to buy Chiquita's wholly-owned German distribution business, Atlanta AG, has been closed.
Through this acquisition the UNIVEG group of companies and Atlanta AG offer a unique international network for delivery and distribution of fresh produce, flowers & plants and convenience products. With UNIVEG's worldwide sourcing capabilities and Atlanta's distribution network, both companies can provide the full spectrum of fruits and vegetables and related services to a broad European customer base. Through this acquisition, UNIVEG and Atlanta combine know-how to further develop the German and Austrian retail market as a complete fresh produce solution provider.

The UNIVEG group has logistic subsidiaries all over Europe to serve its customers. 20 years after the formation, the objectives and the philosophy remained the same, but on a vastly greater scale. UNIVEG is now present in 24 countries worldwide.
